Designed as a home for a maker, this will be the first new building constructed on Pioneertown’s Mane Street since it was recognized as a National Register Historic District. Constructed of locally made adobe bricks and harvested wood, the structure occupies the footprint and form of the former Grubstakes Cafe. While the front facade is harmonized with Mane Street’s historic western filming environment, the side of the structure and open dog-trot space create a conversation with the neighboring Red Dog Saloon.

The interiors, out of sight from Mane Street, are more expressive, demonstrating the sculptural potential of earth as a construction media. Responsive to the site’s natural setting, the building anticipates the movement of the sun and the location’s unusual climatic conditions through strategic placement of glazing and flexible covered indoor/outdoor areas.
